ICT TOP ACHIEVER ASPIRES TO START HIS OWN TECH BUSINESS

Inspired by the Durban University of Technology (DUT) ENVISION2030 strategy which encourages its students to be creative, innovative, entrepreneurial and adaptive to changes in the world, Nkosinathi Mdawonde aspires to start his own technology business and to contribute to the development of South Africa.

The hard working Mdawonde (22) from Swayimane in Midlands graduated Cum Laude for his Diploma in Information and Communication Technology in Application Development at the DUT 2025 Autumn Graduation Ceremony at Indumiso campus in Pietermaritzburg on Tuesday, 13 May 2025.

He feels excited and positive about the future. This year, he is pursuing an Advanced Diploma in ICT in Application Development. He is also looking for an internship or entry-level opportunities in software development to apply his skills and gain real industry experience. Mdawonde aims to become a professional software developer, working in areas like web or mobile app development. His main desire is to eventually start his own technology business.

“I’ve always had a strong interest in technology and solving problems. During my time at DUT, I also completed several online certifications to expand my knowledge. These included courses in Python, Data Structures, and Technical Support from the University of Michigan and Google. These extra learning opportunities helped me grow both academically and personally, and they prepared me for real world challenges in the tech field,” said Mdawonde who described his journey at DUT as both rewarding and life changing.

According to Mdawonde, he strongly associates with the DUT value of excellence. He indicated that throughout his studies, he has always aimed to deliver high quality work and continuously improve himself. He also resonates with integrity, he feels being honest and consistent has helped him to build trust with peers and lecturers.

One of the biggest challenges he faced as a student was balancing many responsibilities such as managing assignments, deadlines, and group projects while also dealing with his personal pressures. But over time, he said he learnt how to stay organised and focused, and that helped him to push through and succeed.

My advice to first years is: “Stay curious and be willing to learn. Programming can be tough at times, but don’t give up. Keep practicing, ask questions, and make use of all the resources you can. Also, start building your own small projects it’s the best way to grow your skills and confidence.”

His advice to first year students is to stay curious, be willing to learn, and make use of all the available resources.

Mdawonde was happy to have his family with him at graduation to celebrate him reaching this milestone.
