While it is crucial for graduates to kick-start their careers soon after they receive their qualifications, it is also important for students to pursue postgraduate studies and get involved in research projects that will have a great impact on national development.

This was the recommendation of Professor Ahmed Bawa, the Vice-Chancellor and Principal at DUT, during the Ikamva National e-Skills Institute (iNeSI) graduation ceremony held on Friday last week (31 October 2014) at the University’s Ritson Hall, Ritson Campus.

More than 40 graduates who partook in the graduation proceedings were awarded either e-Enablement of Government Service Delivery or Competence certificates in Supervisory Skills for Emerging Managers.

Acting iNeSI CEO, Dr Harold Wesso; SALGA Chairperson, Cllr Sibusiso Mdabe and Falake Dladla from the Department of Labour attended the event.

The experience towards attaining a PhD would be an exciting challenge as students are expected to effect vital change in society through their research. Postgraduate studies would also enable individuals to seek answers for themselves using the knowledge that they have acquired in their academic adventures.

Prof Bawa implored graduates to use their academic qualifications in ensuring that their communities were involved in learning activities. This would change the traditional forms of imparting knowledge by ensuring that the community is able to apply information into their day-to-daily lives. In the end, this would also promote self-reliance and equal participation in national building and prosperity.

iNeSI at DUT is part of a national strategy to reduce the lack of e-skills in the country. The unit is aimed at providing and enabling an environment for a co-ordinated response to the challenges posed by the rapidly expanding capacity, mobility, convergence and affordability of new information and communication technologies (ICTs) and their impact on South Africa’s competitive position.

iNeSI leads in the creation of key e-skills development strategies, solutions and practices within South Africa.

Ndodakayibuzwa Msawenkosi who was awarded a Certificate of Competence in e-Enablement of Government Service Delivery said he was excited to have had the opportunity to partake in iNeSI’s initiative. He is confident that the skills he now has will be beneficial to his career and his community.
