INFECTION PREVENTION AND CONTROL WEEK 2023 CELEBRATED THE FUNDAMENTALS OF INFECTION PREVENTION

Students of the Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) short course under the Department of Nursing at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) held the IPC Week at Steve Biko campus on Wednesday, 18 October 2023.

The IPC Week is hosted during the third week of October every year to highlight the importance of preventing infections. The theme for IPC Week 2023 was Celebrating the Fundamentals of Infection Prevention. which highlighted getting back to the basics of infection prevention for everybody.

Infection Prevention and Control Week aimed to recognise the efforts of all healthcare workers to reduce the risk of infection in health services. “Everyone has a role in the prevention and control of infections in society . Simple actions, such as cleaning and hand hygiene, can make big difference,” said Dr Nellie Naranjee.

The topics presented on the day included; TB and Cough Etiquette, Viral Gastroenteritis and Norovirus, Hand Hygiene and the Prevention of HIV and Sexually Transmitted Diseases.

The event was well attended by students who showed great interest in all, of which the prevention of HIV and STDS was the most popular. The sessions were interactive and students participated in all activities and demonstrations. The IPC short course students were the ones doing presentations as this was part of their assessment.
