INTRODUCING DR BUKELWA MBINDA: A JOURNEY OF RESILIENCE, EDUCATION, AND COMMUNITY IMPACT

Born and raised in the dusty streets of Mdantsane township, East London, in the Eastern Cape province, the story of Dr Bukelwa Mbinda is one that reflects resilience, sacrifice, and an unwavering belief in the power of education. Her determination culminated when she was recently conferred with a Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Management Sciences: Specialising in Business Administration at the Durban University of Technology Spring Graduation Ceremony, held at the Olive Convention Centre in Durban.

Her late grandmother, a domestic worker and later a factory tea lady, remains her greatest role model.

“She was the pillar of our family, a woman of unconditional love and selflessness. She not only raised her own children but also took in her sister’s children after her sister passed away, even though her own children were still very small. To me, she was a true hero, embodying resilience, sacrifice, and deep compassion. Alongside her, my mother was another constant source of love and encouragement,” shared Dr Mbinda.

Walking more than a kilometre to school each day, often braving flooded bridges in the rain, she learnt determination early in life. At home, food was shared from one dish among siblings, teaching the values of compassion and togetherness. Despite the challenges, her grandmother’s insistence on the value of education laid the foundation for her future.

“For me, education was never just about myself, it was also for my mother, my family, and my community. From a young age, I found learning exciting and fulfilling, and I believed deeply in the saying that knowledge is power,” reiterated Dr Mbinda.

When her bursary applications were unsuccessful, she refused to give up. Instead, she self-funded her studies, a decision that required sacrifice but reinforced her determination to break barriers and honour the sacrifices of those who came before her.

Her PhD research focused on entrepreneurship and the development of small, medium, and micro enterprises (SMMEs), particularly in rural and underserved communities. Being part of DUT has provided her with the space to grow as both a lecturer and researcher.

According to Dr Mbinda, DUT has provided her a platform to share her experiences and impart knowledge to students, drawing not only from textbooks but also from real-life industry situations.

“The university environment has made it easier to connect with students, guiding them to understand the practical application of theoretical concepts. My journey at DUT has been one of immense growth and exploration. As an academic, I have been exposed to a wide range of teaching and research opportunities, allowing me to develop my skills, expand my expertise, and engage deeply with both students and colleagues,” she said.

Dr Mbinda’s career began as a student assistant at Peninsula Technikon’s library, later moving through roles in finance administration and lecturing at Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT). Each stage of her career was pursued while simultaneously studying further, reflecting her drive for continuous growth.

Today, as a Department of Entrepreneurial Studies and Management lecturer at DUT, she combines academic expertise with real-world experience to empower students. Her ultimate goal is to achieve professorship while creating impact beyond the university.

“I want to be a catalyst for positive change, using my knowledge and experience to influence policies and practices that strengthen the SME sector. By engaging with local businesses, government structures, and educational institutions, I hope to create frameworks that support entrepreneurship, innovation, and sustainable growth,” explained Dr Mbinda.

Her doctoral journey was not just about personal triumph but it was about paving the way for others.

“My short-term vision is not just about personal advancement; it is about making a difference. I want my work to have a real impact, shaping both academic thought and practical solutions that uplift individuals, communities, and the broader entrepreneurial landscape,” concluded Dr Mbinda.
