Durban University of Technology’s (DUT’s) Journalism Alumnus, also former RadioDUT face and drive time host, Matt Tsolo has merged his love for broadcasting and music to launch his podcast together with a website (On Music with Matt/onmusicwithmatt.com).
The Welkom born lad says it was in matric (2016) where the radio bug bit him, which was the same year he started working on his podcast which he produced during the beginning of lockdown in 2020.
“In matric I finally decided that I wanted to do radio work and forget about Health Sciences and my mom was not very happy about that, she was like ‘no child of mine would do radio.’ I said I will be the first one,” said Tsolo.
According to Tsolo, he has always been rebellious when it comes to what he wanted to choose as a career. A few months after matric he had started sending demos to radio stations.
“After matric that was a dream to just try to get into radio as much as I can. I sent in demos that were horrible, I auditioned for anything, but I realised it’s very difficult to crack into the radio industry, so I started working on a podcast called On Music With Matt,” said Tsolo.
He then also started a website that accompanies the podcast which largely shows characteristics of being bred by the love of music more as it is from his grassroots, compared to broadcasting.
“Music has been part of my whole life; radio has also been part of my entire life. Basically, when I was in primary school, I was in a school choir for six years. I have been listening to the radio my entire life, so I wanted to combine the two which is my love for music and radio and in 2016 podcasting, which was the only thing that I could do for myself,” Tsolo said.
Matt Tsolo graduated last year in 2020, amongst the first batch of DUT Alumni to attend a virtual ceremony, as a result of COVID-19.
