KHUMALO IS ECSTATIC TO PUT TO LIFE ALL THAT SHE HAS STUDIED AT DUT AND BECOME AN ASSET IN HER WORKPLACE

“I have always had a passion for anything art and anything design related which is why I decided to pursue Interior Design and study what I loved doing which made all the hard work worthwhile,” said alumna Bongiwe Khumalo.

The 24-year-old enrolled at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) for her National Diploma in Interior Design and recently completed her Advanced Diploma in Interior Design. She is the eldest daughter in her family which has motivated her to work hard so that her siblings can be inspired.

Khumalo recently started working at Hector & Bailey as a junior Interior Designer.

“I am one of the few lucky people that was able to find a job immediately after graduating and I am ecstatic to put to life all that I have studied at DUT and prove to be a great asset in my workplace,” she replied jubilantly.

Being at DUT has also seen her winning the Top design Student and Outstanding Portfolio Award at the year-end Exhibition and Student Recognition Awards ceremony at City Campus, last year.

“It made me feel proud, content, happy and a little overwhelmed. It felt like an acknowledgement of a job well done and justification for the hard work, sleepless nights and dedication I had given to my studies. It also gave me validation and boosted my confidence,” she said.

Khumalo believes besides studying, achieving recognition for her  hard work is a deserving accolade that everyone should experience.

“I think it is vital for students to get such recognition because nothing feels better than knowing that the sleepless nights would reap such rewards, this makes it all the more fulfilling at the end. More than anything, it allows us to stretch ourselves beyond our limits which enables us as students to discover new potential we did not know we were capable of,” added Khumalo.

She explained that being a student at DUT has been such an amazing experience, from being in a new environment to learning about different cultures which has opened her mind to endless possibilities.

“I am very impressed with how versatile my course was,  I was able to learn a bit of fashion design, graphic design, architecture and many more which are all very essential tools in my field of work. Not only was it all theoretical but we also did a lot of practicals which allowed us to put into practice all that we have learned as well,” she said.

Khumalo indicated that transitioning from a student to a ‘working’ person has not been a problem because DUT provided her with the opportunity to do a lot of projects that will prove useful in the world of work.

“I would 100% recommend DUT to another student because it has everything a student needs to study what they love, getting quality education and also learning more about other people and their cultures,” she said.
