At just 24 years of age, Eleki Hloniphani from KwaNdengezi celebrated a remarkable academic achievement at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) 2026 Autumn Graduation ceremony held on Monday, 25 May 2026. Eleki graduated Cum Laude and received the prestigious Dean’s Merit award for his Diploma in Hospitality Management, highlighting his dedication, and commitment to excellence.
For Eleki hospitality has always been more than just a career choice it has been a lifelong passion. He explained that his love for the field began during his high school years, where he chose Consumer Studies because of his strong interest in hospitality and service. From an early age, he knew that he wanted to build a future within the industry, and that passion continued to motivate him throughout his academic journey.
Eleki shared that graduating Cum Laude and receiving the Dean’s Merit award came as a surprise to him. However, he expressed deep gratitude and pride, saying the achievement made him realise that all the hard work, sacrifices, and long hours he invested in his studies had finally paid off. The moment served as a rewarding reminder that perseverance and dedication never go unnoticed.
“I never thought I would reach this level, but I always told myself to keep pushing, even when things were difficult. This achievement is proof that consistency and hard work do pay off,” he explained
Among DUT’s core values, the ones that resonate with Eleki the most are excellence and professionalism. He believes that in everything he does, it is important to always give his best effort and strive for excellence. He also values professionalism highly, explaining that carrying oneself with discipline, respect, and dedication is essential both academically and professionally. These values guided him throughout his studies and contributed greatly to his success.
Although he is currently not working or studying further, Eleki remains optimistic about the future and hopes to continue his studies in hospitality. He believes education will continue opening doors for him and allowing him to grow within the industry he has always loved.
“My journey is not over. This is just one step. I still want to study further and grow in the hospitality industry,” he said.
Offering advice to fellow students who aspire to enter the hospitality field, Eleki encouraged them to remain passionate, disciplined, and patient throughout their journey.
“Hospitality is not just about serving people; it is about attitude. If your heart is not in it, you will struggle,” he advised.
He also urged young people to pursue careers they genuinely love, believing that passion makes it easier to overcome challenges and stay motivated.
