Various representatives from numerous Universities in South Africa attended the prestigious launch of the University Sport South Africa (USSA) Staff Sport Programme, which was held at the Durban University of Technology’s (DUT’s), Ritson Campus, on Saturday, 26 October 2019.
The USSA Staff Sport Programme is a collaboration of 26 universities, aimed at using sports to foster relationships, promote health and providing opportunities for staff to function outside of University protocol. Constituted on 16 April 1994, USSA is considered the official unified national umbrella sports structure for the regulation, organisation and coordination of student sports activities at regional, provincial and national levels in the tertiary education sector of South Africa.
The staff sports programme is an umbrella under the USSA, similar to that of students, and the mission of the USSA Staff Sport Programme is to create an environment which will encourage staff sports persons to strive for excellence in the workplace and in sports as well, while giving participants the opportunity to interact socially and competitively.
The launch of the USSA Staff Sport Programme began with a sports day event where different University staff participated in netball and football competitions. The fun-filled day saw the University of Limpopo take first place in both the sporting code competitions.
Speaking at the launch was DUT’s Dean of Students, Dr Maditsane Nkonoane, who applauded the institution for welcoming such a vital programme.
“The USSA Staff Sport Programme gives us (DUT) an opportunity to not only engage as academics but to function socially outside of our work environment, in a more relaxed atmosphere. We welcome this collaboration with great excitement and look forward to the growth of this exciting programme,” said Dr Nkonoane.
Delivering the keynote address was USSA Chairperson Mologade Mochechela from the University of Limpopo, who added that the launch of USSA was a historical event and that she was excited by the level of commitment from all the staff from the 26 universities.
The second annual USSA Staff programme will be held at the Rhodes University in 2020.
