Mutshidzi Mphaphuli, a 28-year-old from Thohoyandou in Duthuni Village, Limpopo, has achieved a remarkable milestone by completing his Master of Applied Science in Chemistry with Cum Laude at the Durban University of Technology (DUT). Despite facing challenges, Mphaphuli’s journey was rewarding, as he got acknowledged as the top achiever at the Faculty of Applied Sciences graduation session, held at the Olive Convention Centre on Monday, 19 May 2025.
For him, the Master’s programme provided a solid foundation in advanced chemical principles and research methodologies, allowing him to deepen his understanding of the subject and explore areas such as analytical and electrochemistry. He worked closely with knowledgeable and supportive supervisors, which greatly enhanced his research experience. Although there were moments of pressure and long hours in the lab, the sense of achievement and growth made it worthwhile.
Mphaphuli closely associates with DUT’s values of innovation and excellence. Throughout his Master’s degree, he was constantly encouraged to think creatively and push the boundaries of conventional research, nurturing his ability to innovate. The university’s commitment to excellence inspired him to maintain high academic and ethical standards in both coursework and laboratory work.
“The university’s commitment to excellence inspired me to maintain high academic and ethical standards in both coursework and laboratory work. These values worked hand in hand, driving me to not only generate new ideas but to pursue them with rigor, precision, and a strong sense of purpose,” he explained.
While pursuing his Master’s degree, Mphaphuli successfully juggled his studies with his role at the Technology Innovation Agency (TIA). “The balancing act was challenging, but the outcome was rewarding,” he added.
In future, Mphaphuli aspires to build a career in the chemical and environmental research field, applying his knowledge and skills to develop sustainable solutions for real-world problems. He is interested in working in research and development roles, either in industry or academia, and hopes to pursue a PhD in the future.
