LUKE KRISHNAN’S ABE BAILEY ACHIEVEMENT IS A TESTAMENT TO THE TRANSFORMATIVE POWER OF OPPORTUNITY, MENTORSHIP, AND EDUCATION

The International Education Partnerships (IEP) Directorate at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) held the Abe Bailey Award ceremony to honour and to celebrate the outstanding achievement of Luke Krishnan, a student from the Department of Radiography, who has been selected as the recipient of the prestigious Abe Bailey Travel Bursary. The event was a momentous occasion that brought together academic leaders, previous awardees, and supporters to acknowledge not only Luke Krishnan’s success but the values and vision of the Abe Bailey Trust and DUT’s commitment to shaping future leaders.

Director of the International Education and Partnerships Directorate (IEP), Dr Lavern Samuels warmly welcomed all attendees and expressed his appreciation for their presence. In his opening address, he reflected on the origins and purpose of the Abe Bailey Trust, saying that Sir Abe Bailey’s legacy in South Africa lives on through the Abe Bailey Trust which established according to the wishes outlined in his will. he indicated that the Trust funds a prestigious travel bursary aimed at recognising individuals who exhibit exceptional leadership qualities. “Over the years, many South Africans have had the opportunity to benefit from this life-changing award. DUT has distinguished itself as one of the most successful universities in producing recipients of this esteemed award, this is a testament to the university’s continued excellence and dedication to nurturing future leaders,” he said. Dr Samuels emphasised the importance of mentorship and vision, relaying that leaders don’t just become leaders, they create other leaders.

Dr Samuels noted that Krishnan was selected as the recipient due to his passion for making a meaningful impact on the lives of young people, aligning perfectly with the ethos of the Abe Bailey Trust. Dr Samuels proudly shared that the Abe Bailey Trust has produced 18 vice-chancellors, numerous high court and institutional  court judges, among other distinguished alumni, showcasing the far-reaching impact of the bursary. Luke Krishnan has become the 14th recipient in the past 15 years to be awarded the prestigious Abe Bailey Travel Bursary; a testament to the university’s continued excellence and dedication to nurturing future leaders.

Professor Mchunu, Executive Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, expressed her sincere gratitude to Dr Samuels and the International Education and Partnerships (IEP) team for their tireless efforts in identifying and nurturing potential Abe Bailey candidates. She congratulated Krishnan, reminding him that he now carries the DUT brand with him. “You are no longer just Luke from your family; you are Luke from DUT – our ambassador. We are super proud of you. Go out there, fly the DUT flag high, and make us proud,” she said

Mr Nkululeko Gam, representing the Department of Radiography, shared inspiring words about Luke’s growth over the years. Once a quiet student, Krishnan has since demonstrated strong leadership, compassion, and a commitment to excellence. His success is a reflection of his dedication, but also of the support from his peers, lecturers, and mentors. “The Abe Bailey Travel bursary does more than fund travel. It opens doors to international engagement, intellectual growth, and cultural exchange. It is a journey that inspires young leaders to return with broadened perspectives-ready to contribute to South Africa and to the global community with renewed energy and insight.”

Sphesihle Mchunu, a former Abe Bailey recipient (2024), offered his heartfelt congratulations and shared his experience. He described this opportunity as a life-changing one, providing not only giving exposure to international opportunities but also a deeper understanding of different cultures and perspectives. “Be curious, ask questions, and be present. Embrace the similarities and differences you encounter. Carry forward the spirit of the Abe Bailey leadership, service, and hope,” he said. Mchunu concluded by encouraging Krishnan to use this opportunity not just for personal growth but to inspire and to uplift others. He presented a short video showcasing his own travels and the unforgettable experiences he had gained.

Dr Samuels shared his personal journey on how the Abe Bailey scholarship influenced his life and mindset. He encouraged Krishnan to step out of his comfort zone, take bold opportunities, and to create impactful change.

Dr Keiron Boosi advised Krishnan to embark on his journey with an open heart and mind, encouraging him to listen more than speaking, embracing challenges, and to represent both DUT and the South African identity with pride. Echoing this sentiment, Ms Fathima Bibi Shaik wished that the experience would broaden his horizons, create lasting memories, and inspire him to fully immerse himself in the adventure, whether by getting lost in London, singing the national anthem, or simply living each moment to the fullest.

Dr Samuels presented a token of appreciation to Professor Mchunu and Dr Pillay for their invaluable support. He also awarded certificates to the two runners-up, Mahommad Jooma (Chiropractic) and Sydney Mandla Khanyile (Homoeopathy), acknowledging their hard work and perseverance throughout the selection process.

He further recognised the two runner-ups, commending their dedication by awarding them with certificates for their sterling efforts. Krishnan took to the podium, expressing his heartfelt thanks to all who had supported him.

“This moment feels surreal. I would like to thank the IEP, especially Ms Carol Newman, for her guidance. Thank you to the selection committee for trusting me to represent DUT and South Africa. I stand here not alone -I stand on the shoulders of those who believed in me,” he said.

He also extended his special thanks to the Radiography Department, his clinical supervisor, Dr Pavitra Pillay (Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Heath Sciences), the previous recipient Sphesihle Mchunu, Dr Khoza (HOD), and his supporters for their unwavering encouragement.

The Krishnan family was present to witness Krishnan receiving his award, marking a proud and memorable moment for them. Krishnan’s brother offered emotional words, reflecting on his brother’s brilliance from a young age, his perseverance despite life’s challenges, and his determination to rise above difficult circumstances. He expressed deep pride and best wishes for Krishnan’s future.

In a symbolic gesture, Krishnan was then presented with a commemorative certificate, a gift, and the official DUT blazer, signifying his role as a DUT ambassador on the global stage.

The Abe Bailey Travel Bursary represents DUT’s ENVISION2030 strategy and commitment to its lived values and contributes directly to the university’s mission of shaping the future through innovation, creativity, and community engagement.
