Mahatma Gandhi Lecture to celebrate its 10th Anniversary

Mahatma Gandhi Lecture to celebrate its 10th Anniversary

This year’s instalment of the annual Mahatma Gandhi Media Lecture (MGML) is of special significance for several reasons. It’s not only the 10th anniversary of the lecture hosted by DUT Journalism and the Gandhi Development Trust (GDT) but the event on Wednesday April 11 at the City Campus commencing at 16:30 will also serve as a tribute to the late Winnie Madikizela Mandela.

The guest speaker is Sello Hatang, Chief Executive Officer at the Nelson Mandela Foundation. A video in memory of the “Mother of the Nation’ courtesy of Anant Singh’s Videovision will be screened.

Moreover, 2018 marks the 125th anniversary of the arrival of Mahatma Gandhi in South Africa as well as what would have been the 100th birthday of the ‘icon of icons’ Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela.

Trustee of the GDT Ela Gandhi says that the lecture is one of the premier events on the calendar of the organisation. “We’ve enjoyed a very close working relationship with DUT Journalism through the years and the lecture each year has proved to be highly successful.” She added, “we are quite privileged to have Sello Hatang to speak this year, and we could not but seize the opportunity to also pay tribute to Comrade Winnie.” Gandhi is a former Chancellor at the DUT.

The MGML was launched a decade back by the then Minister of Posts, Telecommunications and Broadcasting Jay Naidoo. Speakers through the years included Delhi-based author Adv Anil Nauriya, Africa Program Co-ordinator at the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) Angela Quintal, Dr Yacoob Abba Omar former Director of Operations at the Mapungubwe Institute (MISTRA), Executive Director at the Africa Centre for the Constructive Resolution of Disputes (ACCORD) Adv Vasu Gounden, and Mondli Makhanya Editor-in-Chief at the City Press.

Members of staff, students and the public are welcome to attend the lecture.
