“My journey at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) has been one of growth, resilience, and transformation,” said the euphoric Realeboga Mapule Malatji.
The 20-year-old graduated Cum Laude with her Diploma in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in Applications Development at the Indumiso Campus Hall in Pietermaritzburg on 12 May 2025.
“My time at DUT has equipped me with both technical expertise and soft skills that I will carry throughout my career,” she expressed jubilantly.
Malatji was fortunate to secure a temporary job in his career field, which has given her both confidence and exposure. “This opportunity gives me hope that I will be able to secure a more permanent role in the near future,” she added.
Whilst exploring her postgraduate studies, Malatji looked at DUT in shaping her, which is why she strongly associates with the DUT’s value of accountability.
“It has kept me disciplined and consistent in my efforts,” she added.
Like many students, Malatji faced financial challenges but she was fortunate to be supported by a bursary in her second year through to the final year of study.
She eagerly shared that her family already knew she was graduating with top marks as she was recognised as one of the top achievers in his qualification.
Malatji confessed that this course was not her initial choice. “DUT was not on my list originally, however, due to space constraints, my mom submitted a late application for courses that were available and closest to what I had envisioned. Looking back, I’m grateful for her decision, it led me to the right path,” she said happily.
Malatji has confessed that she plans to study further. “I am particularly interested in venturing into cybersecurity, as it’s a growing field with great impact and opportunities. My aim is to work within the ICT sector, particularly in systems development or cybersecurity,” she shared.
Malatji aims to contribute to solving real-world problems and to continue growing in spaces that challenge and inspire her.
Her advice to first year students is to not limit themselves. “Explore every opportunity, remain focused, and lean into your strengths . Ask questions, seek help when you need it , and trust your journey, even if it starts differently than expected,” she said.
Malatji further extended her heartfelt gratitude to her mother for her unwavering support, as well as DUT for providing a platform for her to thrive in.
“I am also grateful to my lecturers and peers who walked this journey with me,” she beamed.
