Nkosikhona Maphisa from Emondlo, graduated Cum Laude with the Dean’s Merit Award for his Diploma in Management Sciences specialising in Operational Management at the Durban University of Technology (DUT). He revealed that obtaining this prestigious award is by far the biggest achievement in his life. The graduation was hosted on Friday, 23 May 2025 at the Olive Convention Centre (OCC) in Durban.

“Graduating with Cum Laude with the Dean’s Merit award is the biggest achievement in my life because it simply means my hard work and dedication towards my academics did not go unnoticed. It reflects that I am consistent, accountable, professional and a focused student. It also proved that my sponsor invested their money for good reasons and results,’’ he added.

Maphisa’s journey was never easy in the beginning, he had endured funding issues and as a result he could not afford the institution’s residence, rent, meals and transport which was a huge setback in his academics. However, through reliance he prevailed and excelled.

Mpahisa’s outstanding performance in his first academic year opened opportunities for him, he got the sponsorship from Toyota Tsusho Africa. After he had secured the sponsorship things changed to better, he was now able to focus on his studies.

He revealed that he associates with all the DUT Living Values and Principles, he applied them in all his academics, especially professionalism and commitment. These principles, and values have empowered him academically and personally.

Operations Management was indeed his choice of study. Before enrolling, he had researched about the course to have a depth understanding of what he was getting himself into. Also, he needed to know and understand how goods are produced; how services are provided.

Presently, Maphisa is enrolled for his Advanced Diploma in Management Science specialising in Operations Management, and he is planning to further his studies to PhD.

His long-term goal is to develop his skills and to demonstrate his capabilities in academic spheres and work for one of the big companies in South Africa.

Maphisa advised first-year students who wants to embark in the same career, to do research about their careers before enrolling. “Stay focused, dedicated, respectful and attend all the lectures,” he said.

He extended his warmest gratitude to DUT for their sensational, professional and incredible service in academics. He also thanked his sponsor Toyota Tsusho Africa for their financial support which enabled him to stay determined and focused on his academics.
