Mathomane Achieves Her BTech Through Her Family’s Love and Support

“I always knew I wanted to do Journalism and I knew this is what I wanted to do,” said Nondumiso Mathomane.

Originally from Richards Bay, Mathomane came to Durban to pursue her Journalism Diploma in 2005, she graduated in 2007, and 12 years later she obtains her BTech in Journalism.

Nondumiso, a mother of two girls (a three year and one – year – old), was expecting her second child when she registered for her BTech in Journalism. “I took my three – months maternity leave but I would not say I had leave because I had to attend classes three days a week,” she said.  She gave birth in March 2018 while she was doing her BTech Degree.

“It was very challenging having to come to University after all these years,” she said. Having to juggle her very demanding work, going home having to cook for her family, doing her assignments, was overwhelming, but with the support from her husband she was able to overcome all these challenges.

Mathomane has worked for the eThekwini Municipality for four years. She was first appointed as a Journalist/Writer for the municipality’s Metro/eZasegagasini newspaper, she was later appointed as the Sub-Editor and has recently been appointed as the Publications Manager.  She has also worked for Isolezwe, Isolezwe LangeSonto (Sunday) and Daily News.

She wishes to thank her husband for his continued support throughout her studies. “I cannot thank him enough for his guidance and love, it was like we were both studying together. He would stay up with me whenever I was busy with an assignment, and sometimes cook while I do my work, he has been very supportive,” she said.

Mathomane also has a Diploma in Public Relations Management in which she obtained through  UNISA.
