The beautiful Siphesihle Mbambo, (28), who is living with a disability did not let that deter her from her path of achieving academic success.
Originally from Umzinyathi, Inanda, KwaZulu-Natal. Growing up in a township, her journey was not always easy, but those challenges shaped her into a determined and resilient person.
“I use a wheelchair for mobility and have learned to overcome obstacles through perseverance and self-belief,” she shared.
She began her studies at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) in 2021, where she had enrolled for a Diploma in Human Resource Management. She later progressed to pursue her Postgraduate Diploma in Human Resource Management. “My journey at DUT has been life changing. Beyond academics, it gave me an opportunity to advocate for accessibility improvements on campus, including ramps and better support for students living with disabilities. DUT helped me grow academically, personally, and professionally, and it gave me the confidence to use my voice to create change,” she shared.
Graduating with her Postgraduate Diploma in Human Resource Management at the DUT 2026 Autumn Graduation ceremony was a moment of pride and gratitude for her. It represented her resilience, hard work, and faith.
“Coming from a background where many doubted my abilities, this achievement proves that disability does not define potential. This graduation is not only my victory but also a victory for my family and my community.
The challenges she had faced as a student living with a disability included inaccessible campus facilities at times, lifts not always functioning, transportation difficulties, especially during rainy weather, and having to rely on others before she could afford her electric wheelchair
Siphesihle Mbambo’s family were overjoyed and extremely proud. Her mother was especially emotional and proud because she is among the first graduates in her family, and their support and belief in her have been her biggest motivation.
For Siphesihle, Human Resource Management was not initially her first choice. She had dreams of studying drama or fashion design, but she chose HR because it offers practical opportunities, especially in an office-based environment that aligns well with her mobility needs. Over time, she developed a genuine passion for the field.
Currently, Siphesihle isworking as an intern in Human Capital Services at DUT. Previously, she had also completed an internship at East Coast Energy. Her work allows her to apply her academic knowledge practically while gaining valuable professional experience.
“My journey has taught me that resilience, faith, and determination can turn challenges into opportunities. I hope my story inspires others to never give up on their dreams,” she expressed.
For now, Siphesihle plans to take a short break, and intends to pursue her Masters in the near future.
Her advice to first-year students is to believe in one’s self and stay committed to one’s goals.
“The journey may be challenging, but consistency, discipline, and asking for help when needed will take you far. Do not allow circumstances to limit your dreams,” she concluded.
