MBANE ATTRIBUTES A STRONG PARENTAL SUPPORT SYSTEM FOR HIS CUM LAUDE

Despite having challenges at some point to finance his Degree of Bachelor of Technology: Civil Engineering, Mawande Mbane eventually graduated Cum Laude and says having supportive parents encouraged him to pass with flying colours.

Mbane, who hails from Sterkspruit in the Eastern Cape graduated with Cum Laude during the Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment graduation session on this morning at the  Fred Crookes Sports Centre, Durban.

Currently working for Amaqakala Construction and Projects at Empangeni in Northern KwaZulu-Natal, Mbane recalls how his parents came through for him in his most desperate times.

“My parents have been my strongest support system. There was a time when my contract ended with eThekwini Municipality and I could not pay for my fees and they showed up. I was also in a bit of a bad space at that time, but they were there for me and they pushed me,” said Mbane.

He says passing with Cum Laude did not come as a surprise and attributes hard work and sleepless nights for his outstanding results.

“Even though it was not easy because I was working at the same time while doing my BTech, but I was doing my best, so I was actually expecting it. Even though I am not an A-student my effort was enough to put me at that level,” added Mbane.

He further said that coming from a family that values education added extra pressure for him to perform to a certain standard.

“I grew up going to my dad’s graduation, my mother’s graduation, my uncle’s graduation. I would say that education has always been important in my family. Even my parents when I came to Durban, they told me that this is the greatest opportunity that they can ever give me, to go and study. They said I must make the most of it and that is what I have been doing ever since,” added Mbane.

With regards to his future plans, Mbane said the first goal would be to register with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA). He also aspires to become a Project Manager and open his own Civil Engineering or consulting company at Sterkspruit in his hometown.
