The Durban University of Technology’s (DUT’s) Student Representative Council (SRC) Project Officer, Syabonga Luyanda Mbatha, believes that the walls of DUT nurtured him into an energetic and innovative leader that he is today.
The 23-year-old graduated for his Bachelor of Education in senior phase and FET in languages during the DUT 2024 Autumn Graduation ceremony which was held at the Indumiso Campus Hall, Midlands.
The Ladysmith-born shared his struggles, as he felt that juggling academics and student politics became daunting at times, however his choice of study was based on his interests, strengths and career aspirations.
“I chose Bachelor of Education because I am passionate about helping others for their success and saw it as a stepping stone towards my desired career path. As a student I faced various challenges, including time management, balancing academics with extracurricular activities, and navigating through complex course materials. However, overcoming these challenges helped me develop resilience and adaptability skills,” he said.
Mbatha, whose academic aspiration is to reach a PhD level, is currently enrolled for his Postgraduate Diploma in Ecotourism. To first-year students aspiring to embark on a similar career path, Mbatha advised them to stay focused, manage their time effectively, seek support from mentors and peers, and never stop learning and exploring new opportunities within the field.
In his conclusion, he emphasised the importance of networking, internships, and gaining practical experience in one’s chosen field as he believes these experiences can significantly enhance understanding and readiness for the professional world.
