MBEKEZELI MADUNA OBTAINS SECOND DEANS MERIT FOR HIS HONOURS DEGREE IN ENGINEERING

Graduating Cum Laude with Deans Merit is not something surprising for Mbekezeli Sandile Maduna, as he first did it in his undergraduate studies. His excellent academic journey was celebrated during the Durban University of Technology (DUT) Autumn graduation ceremony, held at the Olive Convention Centre this afternoon (Monday, 20 May 2024).

Hailing from Watersmeet, Ladysmith, Maduna received Degree of Bachelor of Engineering Technology Honours in Power Engineering with Cum Laude and Deans Merit. His journey was challenging and rewarding, marked by academic rigor, research opportunities, and personal growth. The programme provided him with a comprehensive understanding of electrical engineering principles, theories, and practical applications, preparing him for a successful career in the field.

“One of the highlights of my study journey was the opportunity to work on hands-on projects and research initiatives that allowed me to apply classroom knowledge to real-world challenges. Whether it was designing electrical systems, troubleshooting complex problems, or implementing innovative solutions, these practical experiences were instrumental in honing my technical skills and problem-solving abilities. Overall, my study journey at DUT as a Bachelor of Engineering Technology Degree in Electrical Engineering (Honours) graduate was a transformative experience that not only provided me with a top-notch education but also instilled in me a passion for innovation, excellence, and lifelong learning,” he explained.

The journey was not always smooth for Maduna, as he once encountered difficulties while working on a research project during his honour’s studies. The project involved designing and simulation of a PV system to tackle the issue of load-shedding, and he  initially struggled to make significant progress despite putting in considerable time and effort.  However, he soldiered and asked for proper guidance from his mentors.

“At first, I felt overwhelmed by the complexity of the problem and uncertain about how to proceed. I found myself stuck in a cycle of frustration and self-doubt, questioning my abilities and feeling discouraged by the lack of tangible results. However, I knew that giving up was not an option, and I was determined to overcome this challenge. I reached out to my supervisor Prof Ojo, and mentors Mr Sandile Dlamini and Dr Ngongoma for guidance and support. They provided valuable insights, feedback, and encouragement, helping me gain clarity on the problem and identify potential solutions,” he explained.

Maduna is currently enrolled for Master of Engineering in Electrical Power, focusing on renewable energy and power systems. He aims to contribute to innovation and problem-solving within the field of electrical engineering. Whether it’s designing new technologies, improving existing systems, or solving complex technical challenges, He is passionate about using my skills and creativity to drive positive change and make meaningful contributions to the industry.
