MBHELE PRAISES INNOBIZ DUT FOR HELPING HER ESTABLISH HER BUSINESS WHILE STILL STUDYING

The fear of studying an ‘unpopular’ course did not falter Zinhle Mbhele from her academic path of completing a Diploma in Tourism Management. Mbhele graduated at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) 2024 Autumn Graduation ceremony on Tuesday, 14 May 2024, which was held at Indumiso campus in Pietermaritzburg.

The 29-year-old Ladysmith born shared her stressful, academic journey as she highlighted how she was taunted by society for her career choice, until the innobiz DUT Centre for Entrepreneurship and Innovation shaped her perspective and enlightened her to venture into the beauty business. She is now the founder of Lolos Elegant Spot salon, located in Pietermaritzburg.

“I have gained knowledge on how to take a journey in an entrepreneurship side. All thanks to innobiz DUT for making my dream come true by equipping me with necessary skills and knowledge on starting my own business,” she said.

She highlighted that her personality is what led her to pursue a tourism career as she was a nature fanatic at a young age.

“I enjoy spending time outdoors and learning about new cultures. I’m passionate about understanding the world around me and helping others. I like to see the positive side of things and I’m always looking for ways to learn and grow,” she said.

Mbhele began her studying journey with DUT in 2021, where she registered for Diploma in Tourism Management and is currently enrolled for Advanced Diploma in Ecotourism. She said Tourism was never her choice of study, but due unforeseen circumstances, she ended up doing it.

Giving an insight on her future plans, Mbhele emphasised the importance of grabbing any opportunities available and making it work for one.

“I have learnt that it is not a must to look for a job after graduating from university. One can also explore the entrepreneurship route and create a job for yourself and others. There are many opportunities out there, but it requires one to be creative and innovative, which is what we are taught at DUT,” she said.
