MEET MR & MISS GREEN 2017

MEET MR & MISS GREEN 2017

Mr and Miss DUT Green Campus Initiative 2017, Sifiso Blose and Thandeka Mchunu cannot wait to spread positivity towards environmental care to their peers.

Mchunu and Blose were recently crowned winners for the 2017 Miss Green competition which was held at the Fred Crookes Sports Centre, Steve Biko Campus.

“From the day of the auditions right till the final show, the competition was a journey I was exceptionally honoured to be part of,” said Mchunu.

Although, she (Mchunu) had participated in beauty pageants before this, she feels that none of them were of such magnitude. “This is one modelling competition that has values that are similar to what I believe in and I think that is why it didn’t intimidate me in any way and I am faithful that this whole year I will give off my best as the 2017 Miss GCI,” added Mchunu.

GCI is a nature and climate change advocacy group that mainly focuses on raising awareness and teaching students about nature conservation, plantation and power preservation. Every year the GCI team will host a Mr&Miss DUT GCI competition looking for their next ambassadors. In 2016, the competition was won by Brian Ndimande (Mr DUT GCI) and Sinethemba Madlala (Miss DUT GCI) and for 2017 Mchunu and Blose crowned as the new ambassadors.

Just like, Mchunu, Blose entered the competition with determination to not only win but contribute immensely in awareness about Environmental change and care. “I have always been inquisitive about climate change and the environment, I think that is why when I joined DUT and heard of GCI, I decided to first sign myself up to represent them (GCI),” he said.

Prior to being crowned Mr GCI, Blose served as part of the representatives of GCI for over a year. “Being crowned Mr Green has not yet sunk but I am positive that I will be a good ambassador that is why before I entered this competition I did an introspection on the weaknesses that might hinder my journey and I made sure I work on them,” added Mchunu.

Both students will serve as ambassadors of the DUT GCI and they will partake in all its activities for a year.
