MEET THE FIRST CLASS OF THE MIDLANDS CAMPUSES GRADUATES OF 2021

The first, exciting Graduation session at the Midlands (Royal Showgrounds) showcased beautiful fashionistas who aimed to impress with their glitzy, designer shoes, stunning white, pink and silver designer gowns forming part and parcel of the grand, first of eight sessions earmarked at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) Faculty of Arts and Design Celebratory Autumn Graduation ceremony. The sessions take place from Monday, 25 July to Wednesday, 27 July 2022.

The session saw the exhilarating conferring of a Degree of Doctor of Education to Phenyane Geremiah Tlali for his research dissertation titled: The cultural influence on animal colours in English descriptive essay writing at Lesotho General Certificate of Secondary Education.

Dr Tlali, a High School teacher in Lesotho expressed his utter jubilance upon graduating today, sharing that he never thought this day would come and before he knew it, it has.

He made mention that time management was one of his main gripes in his journey of study but he found the strength to continue and see it through and graduate with his revered doctorate.

His study investigated cultural influence on animal colours in English descriptive essay writing at Lesotho General Certificate of Secondary Education (LGCSE).

“The findings revealed that most learners (75% of the sampled essays) preferred black and white for their favourite animals, 2% preferred blue/yellow colour pairs while 0% used red/green colour pairs from their theory. A total of 3% of the sampled essays used other colours not provided in the theory,” he added.

For Dr Tlali, he now aims to dip further into his research skills and take research as a course and become a research specialist, and possibly look into studying at DUT.

DUT’s Dr Joe Molete, Director: Midlands Campuses, Programme Director, also conveyed his congratulatory remarks to the graduates saying that he hopes they will continue to contribute positively and entrepreneurially to help grow the economy in the country.

“You are amongst the few that are chosen. I heard many Cum Laudes called here, so you are a group of smart people, Congratulations to you all. Graduates you will automatically become members of the convocation, a statutory body that helps shape the future for the university. We hope you will continue to maintain that through the university. We also hope that you will continue with your postgraduate studies, Congratulations to those who have already enrolled,” he stressed.

He further indicated that he hopes there will be more PHD graduates studying through DUT to become doctors.

Giving the concluding remarks was Professor Runette Kruger. Executive Dean Faculty of Arts and Design.

“Allow me first to congratulate you, who have received recognition for completing your qualifications in the first-in person graduation ceremony in two years.
