MFUNDO MADIBA GRADUATES WITH HER THIRD QUALIFICATION AT DUT 2026 AUTUMN GRADUATION

Today, at the Durban University of Technology’s Indumiso Campus Hall in Pietermaritzburg, Mfundo Bright Madiba crossed the graduation stage under the Faculty of Accounting and Informatics, marking not only the completion of his academic journey but also the beginning of a professional one shaped by real-world experience.

For Mfundo, DUT has been more than an institution of learning it has been a space where education and experience intersect. His journey reflects how the university does not only focus on teaching theory, but also actively prepares students for the world of work through practical exposure, leadership opportunities, and experiential learning.

Originally from Sweetwaters in Pietermaritzburg, Mfundo began his studies at DUT in 2021, enrolling for a Higher Certificate in Human Resource Management. He performed exceptionally well, completing the qualification with an 83% aggregate and achieving seven distinctions out of eight modules, setting a strong foundation for his academic path.

He later advanced to a Diploma in Business and Information Management (2022–2024), where he faced academic pressure and personal challenges, yet remained committed and completed the qualification on time. His determination continued into his Advanced Diploma in in Human Resource Management in 2025, where his performance earned him a merit award from the Midlands Finance and Information Management Department. This was after achieving a 78% aggregate, ultimately graduating with Cum Laude at 79%.

During this period, Mfundo also served as a class representative, strengthening his leadership skills and learning how to engage, support, and represent fellow student qualities that would later connect directly to his professional development.

In 2026, he enrolled for a Postgraduate Diploma in Business and Information Management, continuing to build on his academic foundation while already transitioning into the professional environment through DUT’s experiential learning platforms.

Today, Mfundo is not only a graduate but also an intern at the DUT Student Counselling Unit at Midlands Campus. In this role, he contributes to student support and well-being initiatives, gaining hands-on experience in working with students, understanding institutional support systems, and applying his academic knowledge in a real workplace setting. He also serves as a Residence Advisor, further deepening his involvement in student development and campus life.

His journey reflects DUT’s broader commitment to producing work-ready graduates. The university’s approach ensures that students are not only taught but are also exposed to environments where they can apply their skills, build confidence, and transition smoothly into professional spaces.

For Mfundo, graduation is therefore not an endpoint but a continuation of growth. “Success is not about how fast you get there, but how committed you are when the journey gets difficult,” he said.

He credits the DUT values of excellence, accountability, and respect for shaping his discipline and resilience throughout his studies and early career experience. Like many students, he faced challenges such as balancing academic demands with personal pressures, but these experiences strengthened his ability to manage time, remain focused, and seek support when needed.

When he received news of his academic success, his family expressed deep pride, recognising the sacrifices and dedication behind his achievement.

Looking ahead, Mfundo aims to specialise in business information systems, governance, and strategic management, with aspirations of contributing to innovation and organisational growth.

To first-year students, his message is grounded in a lived experience: “DUT does not only teach you, it prepares you for life. Stay disciplined, embrace every opportunity, and treat every experience as part of your growth. Consistency and exposure will take you further than talent alone.”
