Lucy Modise was not just satisfied with completing her Chemical Engineering degree in 2016, she then decided to venture into the management field, as she had registered for her Advanced Diploma in Management Sciences, specialising in Operations Management which she had passed with flying colours.
The 33-year-old graduated at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) esteemed Autumn Graduation ceremony, held at the Olive Convention Centre on 25 May 2024. She had expressed her excitement of being awarded the Cum Laude accolade with the Dean’s Merit award as well.
“I came into this course not knowing anything about Operations Management since I had come from a Chemical Engineering background, but I had immersed myself into learning as much as I could, and I had enjoyed learning and growing my knowledge in such a great environment. The lecturers were very encouraging, and I had the best study buddies,” she shared.
After completing her first degree, the Howick born was eager to learn new ways of improving and contributing to the efficiency of systems in her workplace. This course has given her a broader understanding of organisational management and has opened doors to career fields she never had considered before.
She is currently working at uMngeni-uThukela Water as a Senior Process Controller, where she oversees the operation and control of unit processes to produce potable water according to statutory and regulatory requirements. She aspires to work in Water Management, contributing to the provision of water resources and technologies necessary to remedy the water challenges facing the country.
