Ghulam Masudh Mohamed (23) recently graduated Cum Laude and obtained the prestigious Deans Merit Award for academic excellence at the DUT Celebratory Autumn Graduation ceremony at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli Durban International Convention Centre.
The Information Technology’s (IT’s) Teaching Assistant, from the Faculty of Accounting and Informatics, started his journey at DUT in 2017 when he did his National Diploma in Information and Communication Technology: Applications Development of which he completed in 2019. He then pursued his Advanced Diploma in ICT which he completed in 2020. Thereafter, he completed his Bachelor of ICT Honours in 2021. This year, 2022 he is doing his Masters in ICT at DUT. Mohamed graduated Cum Laude and obtained the Dean’s Merit Award for all his qualifications to date.
“I am completely humbled and forever grateful to the Almighty God and completely appreciative to my friends and family. I honestly have no words to describe how it feels to be getting Cum Laude and the Dean’s Merit Award for the three qualifications in a row,” he said jovially.
His parents were extremely emotional and excited when they heard that their son is graduating Cum Laude and obtaining the Dean’s Merit Award for the third time.
ICT was Mohamed’s first choice, he always had an interest in computers from a very young age. By the age of three years he was already computer literate and thoroughly enjoyed IT in High School. This became a motivation for him to choose ICT at DUT.
When asked of any challenges he had faced whilst studying, Mohamed indicated that group work always caused a lot of conflict between him and his group mates because he had to work with different people with different attitude towards their school work. As the time went on, he and his group mates came up with strategies to resolve their conflicts which included regular meetings and bettering their group communication skills which helped them to be able to complete their assessments and tasks on time and obtain great results.
Mohamed is currently doing his research towards carbon footprint modelling in a South African context, as this forms his research scope for his Master’s thesis in ICT.
“To first years’ who wants to study ICT, I would like to say consistency and hard work is key. In the field of ICT, you need to be constantly working on a daily basis in order to build your knowledge. Working everyday will allow you to make progress towards completing your studies with good results. Build your skill-set and equip yourself with the mindset to be an academic,” he said.
