MR AND MISS DUT 2018 WANT TO LEAD FROM THE FRONT

Following the crowning of Mr and Miss Durban University of Technology 2018, Siyavuya Ndimeni and Zabelo Hlabisa are eager to lead by example amongst their peers at the University.

Ndimeni and Hlabisa we crowned winners of the 2018 Mr and Miss DUT beauty contest in August 2018 at the Fred Crooks Sports Centre in Durban.

When finishing his National Diploma in Video Technology, Ndimeni who comes from Bizana in the Eastern Cape plans to further his studies until PhD level where he wants to focus on electronics in the film industry.  While he admits that education is important, Ndimeni said the current system has failed in some aspects.

“Nowadays we learn to accumulate, be tested, pass and forget, and the cyclical nature of it continues. I feel we would progress so much if the school syllabus would include: Meditation, how to budget or run a household, how to garden and social skills on how to be a functioning member of society,” said Ndimeni.

Ndimeni’s modelling career began in 2014 and says his love for clothes and other aesthetic aspects of modelling fuelled his passion to partake in beauty contests. As Mr DUT, Ndimeni said his role it to inspire change in others and also lead by example.

“Mr DUT is an individual who is a voice for each individual studying at DUT, one who inspires positive change in Mr DUT 2018his immediate environment and his community at large and also someone with good morals on campus. Furthermore, I believe it is someone who is holistic in all spheres of life: Mind, body and spirit,” added Ndimeni.

Meanwhile, Hlabisa who has been making headlines in the media after being crowned Miss Tourism South Africa and the second runner-up during Miss Tourism Worldwide in Indonesia said being Miss DUT requires one to be an inspiration to others.

Miss DUT 2018“Winning Miss DUT means I have achieved my goal. It means being able to promote things like how to be polite and respectable, how to relate to people, how to be a good member of society but most importantly staying true to yourself while leading by example,” said Hlabisa.

Similarly, to Ndimeni, Hlabisa also plans to further her studies, hinting at a Doctorate Degree as her future target.  “After my diploma, I am on doing B-tech next year. I cannot afford to die before being called Dr Zabelo Hlabisa or Professor Zabelo Hlabisa. My coursework inspires me to do research into other topics that are related to my coursework,” added Hlabisa.

Hlabisa further encouraged youth to get educated. She said the future of the country is in the hand of youth.
