Gloria Amo-Duodu graduated Cum Laude in Master’s Degree of Chemical Engineering at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) Autumn Graduation Ceremony at Olive Convention Centre on Monday evening, (22 May 2023). The 30-year-old graduate hails from Bunso in the Eastern region of Ghana and she came to South Africa to pursue her studies.
She defined herself as someone who wants to create new things and Chemical Engineering gives her this opportunity to learn new skills, create and develop all kinds of products and processes.
“It feels great to know I have finally come to an end of a journey and not just ending but ending it well (Cum laude in MEng. Chemical Eng) and making myself, friends, and family proud. I researched on The application of synthesized magnetic nanoparticle for biogas production using anaerobic digestion. This study looked at the possibility of using different synthesized magnetic nanoparticles to enhance biogas produced from wastewater by increasing the methane yield” she explained.
The tenacious graduate detailed her DUT journey as the bumpy road with ups and downs. She added that the issue of funding was one of the challenges she experienced and the Visa Issues. In addition, she believed that postgraduates frequently experience issues with lengthy procurement processes, which cause delays and tension.
Ms Amo-Duodu gave some insight in what inspired her to pursue a Master’s Degree in a male dominated industry. She further acknowledged and thanked all her surroundings who supported while she was studying.
“The desire to set an example for future generations and women drives me to complete my tasks without giving up. In one or two occasions, I almost gave up, but looking back, all my family’s support, especially my mother (Oduraa), her sacrifices would have been in vain if I had given up because of petty issues. I appreciated my Chemical Engineering colleagues especially, Dr. Aniette; a senior colleague and sister, as well as my supervisors (Prof Rathilal and Dr. Chollom), all helped me reach my goal. Finally, the green engineering research group especially Dr. Tetteh built me up and gave me several opportunities and assistance to end this journey well. Hence, until the very end, I put myself up, patted myself on the back, and gathered much courage and zeal to complete my studies”, she proudly said.
Detailing her future plans, the Cum Laude graduate want to be one of the best environmental engineers and have the skills to help her strive more in her career path. She further advised all undergraduates that the journey is not going to be easy however, they should focus on their studies as the world need more of African Engineers.
