Lungelo Mkamba, a Senior Manager for Communications and Marketing at South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) in the Northen Cape province has credited his research supervisors Dr Blose and Dr Moringa after obtaining his Masters Degree.
He graduated for his Degree of Master of Journalism at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) Spring Graduation Ceremony on Friday, 19 September 2025 at Olive Convention Centre (OCC), Durban.
“I just want to give a special credit to my supervisors Dr Maringa and Dr Blose for their support, patience and understanding. Even when I tried to quit, they refused, they motivated me and guided me through out. It was all worth it in the end,’’ he explained.
Mkamba revealed that he almost dropped out two times, thanks to his supervisors who stood by his side and motivated him to never give up. Today, he feels overjoyed to finally get his Masters.
“I want to also to thank my family, colleagues including the students as well, for the motivation and support which has ultimately culminated into this Masters,’’ he said.
A proud product of uMlazi, Mkamba’s academic journey began with a Diploma, followed by a BTech earned with a Deans Merit Award, before reaching his Masters milestone.
Sharing his wisdom to first-year students Mkamba said they must have mentors, believe in themselves, network and make a lot of contacts while studying so that by the time they graduate they have already made names for themselves. He added that they must not be afraid to try new things while assuring them that hard work will ultimately pay off.
He further advised graduates to keep studying and aim for at least a Masters or Honours to remain competitive in today’s job market.
To those who have already succeeded Mkamba said they must not forget to help others who are underprivileged. “Do not be arrogant, give other people opportunities and guidance just like you were once given an opportunity,’’ he concluded.
