ONE DAY TO DUT’S 2018 SPRING GRADUATION

A total number of 1117 students will graduate at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) during the 2018 Spring Graduation ceremonies. The University will host five ceremonies this season. Three on Thursday, 06 September and two on Friday, 07 September 2018.

During the Autumn graduation season in Durban and Pietermaritzburg, 6760 students graduated from DUT, taking our total for the year 2018 to 7877 graduates.

This Spring, DUT will confer four honorary doctorates during the Faculty of Arts and Design’s graduation ceremony on Friday, at 13H00. The graduation ceremonies will be held in Durban only at the Fred Crookes Sports Centre. On day one, Thursday 06 September 2018 the first session will commence at 9h00am, second session at 13h00 and the last session at 17h00. On day two, Friday 07 September there will only be two sessions. The first session will commence at 9h00am and the final session at 13h00.

A total of 493 females and 624 males will graduate this season. Out of the 493 females, 404 are African, 72 are Indian, 13 are White and four are classified as Coloured. A sum of 448 African males, 123 Indian males, 30 White males, 11 Coloured males and 12 classified as Other will be graduating during the 2018 Spring graduation period. Out of the 924 grand total, 72 graduands are obtaining their post-graduate qualifications while 1045 are undergraduates.

Honorary Doctorates

DUT will honour four pioneers in Visual and Performing Arts with the honorary doctorates, including Dr Esther Mahlangu, Mr Johnny Clegg, Mr Welcome Bhodloza Nzimande and Mr Sipho Mchunu.

Dr Mahlangu will be conferred in her recognition of her national and international reputation as an artist, and her contribution to the broader arts sector through her paintings and her promotion of the Ndebele heritage.

While Mr Johnny Clegg and Sipho Mchunu will be honoured for their exceptional contribution towards Juluka and the crucial role that the band played in the social cohesion of South Africa. Juluka’s mass movement against apartheid has been recognised nationally and internationally.

Mr Welcome Bhodloza Nzimande will also be honoured. Nzimande is a renowned legend in broadcasting and in Maskandi music. He retired in 2010 after 32 years of service at the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC). He joined Radio Zulu (now known as Ukhozi FM) in August 1978 as an announcer, translator and producer. Nzimande has also worked as a news reader, presented popular radio programmes including Vuk’ukhanye Afrika (Breakfast Show), Sigiya Ngengoma, Ezidlubhedu and Phumela Eshashalazini (Face the Press) and was a TV presenter co-anchoring the popular traditional music show called Ezodumo. In 1997 he was appointed Station Manager of Ukhozi FM. He currently has his own foundation.
