ONE’S BACKGROUND SHOULD NEVER DETERMINE ONE’S ACADEMIC SUCCESS

Growing up in the north-eastern part of Mpumalanga Province, in Hluvukani, Bushbuckridge, success was never guaranteed, it had to be earned through sacrifice and discipline.

Zinhle Mikhenso Maseko (21) journey of perseverance has led to a proud achievement as she graduated Cum Laude and received the Dean’s Merit Award at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) 2026 Autumn Graduation Ceremony, held at the Olive Convention Centre on Wednesday, 20 May 2026.

“Coming from a small town to a completely new environment was both exciting and overwhelming. After all DUT quickly became more than just a university, it became a second home,” she said.

She explained that Cum Laude is not just about achieving a 75% average. It is proof that discipline and consistency pay off. DUT taught me that excellence is not an accident it is a choice you make every day.”

When asked about the DUT living values she embraced during her time at DUT, she reflected on the importance of accountability and integrity in her academic journey. She explained that she consistently took responsibility for her academic performance from the very beginning, stating that if she performed poorly in a test, she would not blame external factors but instead critically assess her own mistakes and work on improving them.

“I called my mother immediately after seeing the results. There was silence for a few seconds and then she started crying and thanking God. For my family, this was more than my victory it gave my younger siblings hope,” she expressed.

Maseko also hopes to continue her studies through an Advanced Diploma in Accounting or Management Accounting after reapplying for admission. Her long-term dream is to register with CIMA and become a Chartered Management Accountant specialising in forensic accounting.

Maseko also offers advice to students entering university, particularly those in Extended Curriculum Programme (ECP).

“Your Grade Point Average (GPA) is built in the first year. It is easier to maintain 75% than to recover it in the third year. Treat every tutorial like it is your final exam, and choose your friends wisely, surround yourself with people who are also aiming for distinctions,” she advised.
