The Durban University of Technology’s (DUT) Student Governance and Development Unit recently hosted the prestigious DUT Living Values Celebration at the Southern Sun Hotel, uniting student leaders, staff, and university representatives to recognise the outgoing Champions of DUT Living values. This occasion marked the end of term for the inaugural group of Champions of the DUT Living Values, inducted on 12 April 2025
The concept “Champions of the DUT Living Values” focuses on empowering students at DUT to actively embrace, advocate for, and lead initiatives that reflect the university’s core values. As part of this initiative, the Champions of the DUT Living Values programme aims at engaging more students in actively embracing and internalising these values that serve as essential life tools both within and beyond the university environment.
During this period, students were empowered by knowledge, skills and confidence to act as ambassadors of the DUT Living Values. Through their leadership and influence, they were able to inspire their peers to embody and uphold these values, fostering a university that thrives on integrity, respect and excellence.
Mr Masiza Ngculu, Manager: Student Governance, opened the event with welcome remarks and outlined the purpose of the celebration
“We gather to celebrate and acknowledge students who have gone above and beyond in demonstrating DUT’s Living Values transparency, honesty, integrity, respect, accountability, fairness, professionalism, commitment, compassion, and excellence. The purpose of this event is to honour their dedication, inspire others, and reinforce the culture of ethical leadership, inclusivity, and excellence that defines our university community,” said Mr Ngculu.
Mr Ngculu further encouraged both outgoing and incoming SRC members to continue supporting the programme, suggesting it be extended to all students as part of mentorship and leadership development.
“When we see such a group of students doing what you are doing, it inspires us to think bigger. We are exploring how this programme can be extended to benefit all students, especially our first-years, so that they are guided and mentored by those who lead by example,” he explained.
Mr Sihle Nkosi, SRC President, delivered the message of support, expressing heartfelt appreciation to the Living Values Champions and commending their dedication to service and leadership
“Leadership is not about positions or titles, but about service, consistency, and being guided by principles that sustain our institution. Today, we celebrate students who have gone beyond the ordinary call of duty living and promoting these values every day. These values guide how we learn, how we lead, and how we treat one another. On behalf of the SRC, we pledge our continued support for this programme, ensuring that student issues are addressed with integrity, fairness, and compassion, while fostering excellence and accountability. To all the champions, your leadership is an inspiration,” said Nkosi.
Professor Gugu Mchunu, Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences delivered a keynote address, acknowledging the importance of celebrating DUT’s Living Values and the spirit of diversity and inclusion. She commended students for embodying DUT’s core principles and contributing positively to the university culture.
“At DUT, it is amazing how almost everyone understands what it means to live the DUT values and principles. You can ask anyone a student, a parent, or an employee and they will tell you about Envision 2030 and the Living Values,” said Prof Mchunu.
Her address delved into the meaning of diversity and inclusion as vital components of a healthy university environment, emphasizing fairness, equity, and belonging.
“Diversity focuses on the presence of different backgrounds and identities, while inclusion ensures that everyone feels respected, valued, and heard. Everyone deserves fairness and a sense of belonging,” she added.
Bongumusa Madide, one of the 2025 Living Values Champions, delivered a heartfelt reflection on what it means to embody DUT’s virtues.
“I am honoured to stand before you today as a champion of DUT Living Values. These virtues are not just words; they are the foundation upon which we build our character and strive for greatness,” he said.
The event also included an awards ceremony led by Dr Andile Samkele Masuku (Student Development Officer) and Mr Nkululeko Mbatha (Communications Assistant). They praised all 2025 essay‑writing competition participants and the Living Values Champions for their dedication and creativity. The competition attracted 47 entrants reflecting on DUT’s Living Values, with the top three essays recognised for excellence and insight.
Dr Andile Masuku congratulated the winners and the participants. “You did very well, and we are proud to say that some of you truly understand the DUT Living Values,” said one of the facilitators during the prize announcement.
Following the essay awards, the Student Governance and Development Unit honoured the Living Values Champions with certificates of recognition for their exceptional contribution throughout the year.
