PEOPLE MANAGEMENT DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME STRENGTHENS LEADERSHIP AT DUT

PEOPLE MANAGEMENT DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME STRENGTHENS LEADERSHIP AT DUT

The Durban University of Technology (DUT) has reinforced its commitment to effective people management and leadership with the launch of the People Management Development Programme (PMDP), which brought together employees responsible for leading, managing, supervising and developing staff across the University.

The two day programme, held on 4 and 5 August 2026, was hosted by Human Capital Services (HCS) under the ambit of the DVC: People and Operations. It provided participants with an opportunity to deepen their understanding of key people management practices while encouraging greater alignment, transparency and shared learning across the University.

Welcoming participants, Senior Director of Human Capital Services, Mr Victor Mothobi, outlined the various functions of HCS and explained how the Human Capital Services value chain supports employees throughout the University.

The programme covered a range of areas central to effective people management. Ms Helen Mogorosi, Director: Organisational Development and Talent Management, led sessions on Human Capital Management, Integrated Talent Management and Succession Planning, Learning and Skills Development, the Living Values Framework and organisational culture, as well as organisational development and position management.

Ms Fikile Sithole, Manager: Talent Sourcing and Operations, provided insight into the Human Capital Service Delivery Model and the recruitment and selection processes, highlighting the importance of effective systems in supporting the University’s workforce.

Transformation Specialist, Ms Vasistha Ebrahim, focused on transformation and employment equity at DUT, exploring their contribution towards building an inclusive institution and advancing the University’s transformation agenda.

Employee relations and workplace matters were addressed by Mr Mxolisi Msomi, Director: Employee Relations. His sessions covered employee health and wellness, employee relations, workplace harassment, incapacity management and poor work performance.

Performance Specialist, Ms Bronwen Naidoo, also engaged participants on Performance Management and its importance in promoting accountability, transparency, employee development and organisational effectiveness. The session emphasised the role of managers in supporting employees to understand expectations, improve performance and contribute meaningfully to the University’s objectives.

For participants, the programme provided a platform to engage openly on the responsibilities that come with managing people and to gain practical knowledge that can be applied within their respective areas.

The programme was coordinated by Ms Kirshni Rhyman, Skills Development Officer, who facilitated the two day engagement and ensured that participants were able to engage with the different areas of people management.

The PMDP forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen leadership capability and people management practices at DUT. By equipping managers and supervisors with relevant knowledge and practical skills, the programme aims to support a more effective, accountable and people centred working environment.

The initiative further reflects the University’s commitment to its Living Values Framework and to building a culture of professionalism, accountability, respect, integrity and excellence.
