PHILANE NGWANE MAKES IT TO THE FINANCIAL SECURITY OLYMPIAD FINALE

Durban University of Technology (DUT) Information Communication Technology student, Philani Ngwane (21) makes it to the financial security Olympiad finale which took place online due to COVID-19.

Ngwane will be competing with students who are under the BRICS formation, BRICS is the acronym coined to associate five major emerging economies: Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.

Ngwane, who comes from a rural developing area in Port Shepstone, attended Kwa-Zamokuhle Primary School and Buhlebethu High School. Ngwane said that he was lucky that when he finished his matric, he received four offers, three of them were from DUT and the other from another institute, he chose to do ICT here at DUT because from a young age he has always wanted to do Information Communications Technology.

This year’s international Olympiad is a financial security Olympiad which is about the various types of financial fraud and the basic rules of financial literacy. The event was planned by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation, Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation, and the Deputy of Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko.

The aim of the Olympiad is to increase the informational, financial, and legal literacy of children and youth, to promote their professional orientation, and to develop scientific knowledge in the field of financial security.

Speaking about his financial security Olympiad finale, Ngwane mentioned that he had never thought that in his wildest dream he could ever be selected to participate in such a prestigious event.

“I was super happy but did not expect it, I know that good things come to those who do not rush and panic, but who are just hard-working and willing to be involved in a successful team. This was a great opportunity to be chosen as one of the students that also represented South Africa in Russia,” said Ngwane.

Philane recently went to Sirius, Russian to participate in the Olympiad from the 10th to 14th of October 2022. Ngwane obtained 4 Certificates from the seven activities that he participated in with one Gold medal.

“It was a fantastic opportunity not only to learn about the Olympiad in general, but to also get a true education about what youth development is and how the government can uplift youth skills and create more opportunities for the youth to express themselves for the practice of truly global opportunities,” he said.
