PHIWAYINKOSI MCHUNU SETS HIS SIGHT ON VARSITY FOOTBALL GLORY

Phiwayinkosi Mchunu from KwaMashu in Durban has one goal in mind, winning the Varsity Football Tournament.

The 22-year-old, enrolled for Diploma in Management Sciences: Business Administration, has made it clear that his goal is to win the Varsity Football tournament. He is determined to make his mark on the pitch to help the team win.

“My main goal is to win the Varsity Football Tournament. To achieve that, I will work tirelessly to score as many goals as possible and create opportunities for my teammates.” he said.

While he has personal ambitions, Mchunu emphasised that football is a team sport.

“It is about shining together, not as individuals. Putting the team first is key. We win by working and supporting each other.” he explained.

He also revealed that his football journey was inspired by his father who bought him a soccer ball as a gift at the age of six, since then he had a fallen in love with the game. Today he is playing in of the biggest tournament in country, thanks to his father who sparked his passion.

Interestingly, despite being a forward, Mchunu draws inspiration from one of the top midfielders in South Africa, the Mamelodi Sundown’s star Marcelo Allende, whose vision and creativity on the field he deeply admires.

Despite the difficult start in the tournament Mchunu remains optimistic that they will turn things around as the team. He is looking forward to DUT FC’s second Varsity Football home game against University of Free State (UFS) at Harry Gwala Stadium in Pietermaritzburg on Thursday, 21 August 2025, starting at 18h30.
