Poetry session at Mansfield Hall

Poetry session at Mansfield Hall

Izinkondlo zamaciko (poetry by the poetic), a Pneumarella Society of Arts monthly event aimed at showcasing talented artists, will be held at the Durban University of Technology Mansfield Hall, on Saturday 31 March. The four-hour programme promises an afternoon of pure gratification featuring Durban’s poetry greats, with a number being regulars at the DUT weekly poetry sessions.

“Izinkondlo zamaciko was started early this year to give professional artists a platform to showcase their talents,” said Simiso Sokhela, Pneumarella Society of Arts Managing Director and Information Technology student.

With the upcoming event, Sokhela said Pneumarella partnered with DUT’s SRC to host the event in a student orientated environment, as poetry and other arts are very popular with students. Furthermore, Sokhela said Pneumarella concurs with the SRC’s vision to change the image of the institution. “We would like to alter the common mentality that DUT is about strikes and parties and show the institution as a centre for education and growth,” he said.

That is why this particular show will incorporate poetry as a form of “edutainment” (meaning to entertain and educate) for the students.

Pneumarella is owned by Sokhela and DUT alumni S’thakaselo Mchunu and Nontobeko Mahlanga. It caters for and is a hub of artists in all forms with elements of poetry, drama, music, dance, fine arts and photography.
