Presenting: Our Story at the Courtyard Theatre

DUT presents original new work: Our Story,  a series of original, funky, poignant and funny vignettes which comes to the Courtyard Theatre on from 9 to 10 September 2015 at 7pm as well as the DUT City Campus from 11 – 12 September 2015 during lunchtime.

The lunchtime shows will be taking place as part of the DUT Arts and Design Digital Festival.

DUT Drama and Production Studies Department’s Nellie Ngcongo has conceptualised and created the production which she also directs. Our Story is a one act production – a series of workshopped vignettes which look at issues important to young people in contemporary South Africa including healthcare, education, unemployment and service delivery.

Nine students make up the cast, and together with two researchers, they have crafted, created and scripted the production under the watchful eye of Ngcongo. The cast, which auditioned for roles, is made up of first, second and third year Drama and Production Studies students.

Ngcongo strongly believes in the nurturing of new writing talent and the need for new, current material. “We need our young performers to find new, exciting and relevant voices and for them to look to the contemporary situation for their inspiration,” she said. “We have come through the elation of the new democracy, but the dream has morphed into our difficult contemporary reality. This needs to be expressed creatively,” she said.
