Durban jewelry designer and manufacturer, Vijay Shah won first prize in the Anglo Plat award held recently in Sandton. A brief was given for designers to produce an outstanding design accordingly. The theme was how designers would see the world in the future: 2040-2060. This competition was open to students and professionals.
Shah describes himself as a lover of science fiction. “I have watched almost every science fiction movie ,from Star Wars to Iron Man. These movies inspired me,” he says. For this competition he designed a mask which fit perfectly on the model’s face. This won him 1st Place in the Professional Category.
Last year Shah was involved with the Durban University of Technology Jewelry Design students. He helped them with their designs and as a result they achieved 3rd place. “The fantastic part is that we shared knowledge,” he comments. He visits campus from time to time to gain information on techniques of design.
He is grateful that entering these competitions has offered him “a challenge and recognition in the jewelry industry”. Last year he also achieved 1st place in the Anglo Plat Awards. He has a degree in Fine Arts and studied at the then University of Durban-Westville, now the University of KwaZulu-Natal.
