DUT Drama Studies New Playwrights Festival

DUT Drama Studies New Playwrights Festival

The Department of Drama Studies invites you to its New Playwright’s Festival

Date: 10-12May 2010
Venue: Courtyard Theatre, Ritson Campus, entrance on Steve Biko Road.
Time: 6pm-8pm

Free Entrance

The New Playwright’s Festival will host five new play readings each night, by unpublished novice playwrights. It hopes to see growth through active engagement and interaction of new writers with the public, their peers, academics and industry practitioners.

Actors will carry and read scripts, dressed in costumes on elaborate sets. They will be frequently seated, whilst the writer reads the stage directions. The focus of the festival is on the written text rather than the performance text and design elements. However, significant focus will be placed on the plays direction.

This forum aims to encourage new works by youth and creates a foundation to voice new South African works. The plays are short 15 minute pieces, with five short works read each night. All plays showcased are potential short theatre scripts in their initial stages and still retain their draft format status, awaiting critical engagement to turn them into masterpieces.
The public is invited to provide constructive feedback.
