PRESS CONFERENCE: ABE BAILEY TRAVEL BURSARY AWARD 2013

Media Statement by Alan Khan, Senior Director: Corporate Affairs at the Durban University of Technology

You are cordially invited to attend a media briefing and celebratory tea to honour the winner of the Abe Bailey Travel Bursary Award 2013, on Friday morning at 11H00 (15 November 2013) at the Durban University of Technology’s ML Sultan Campus.

The Abe Bailey Travel Bursary Award is a prestigious bursary awarded to students who are academically strong and have demonstrated exceptional qualities of leadership and service; with a good track record not only on campus but also in a wider social context – who are able to function as part of a select and highly skilled group.

The awardee will meet 20 other South Africans on the programme in the United Kingdom.

The Abe Bailey Trust and Travel Bursary was established in terms of the will of the late Sir Abe Bailey, who died in 1940. The Trustees of the Abe Bailey Trust make funds available for travel bursaries known as the Abe Bailey Bursaries. These bursaries give university students and university staff of junior lecturer status an opportunity to visit the United Kingdom, participating in educational tours according to an approved programme.

The objective of the Travel Bursary is to broaden the views of young South Africans by enabling outstanding (South African) students who show exceptional leadership qualities and a strong service ethic to:

• effect greater understanding and co-operation among those with various language and cultural backgrounds;

• foster enterprise, commitment and effective participation in a common future; and

• promote South African unity.

The bursaries are awarded each year and cover the cost of an all expenses paid three week educational tour of the UK.

Please RSVP by the end of tomorrow (Wednesday, November 13, 2013).

The event will take place as follows:
