PROF BRIJLAL WINS AN INTERNATIONAL AWARD ON DISTINGUISHED ACADEMIC FOR SOCIAL SCIENCES AT THE GCBSS

The Global Academy of Training and Research recently hosted the 13th Global Conference on Business and Social Sciences 2022 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The Durban University of Technology’s (DUT’s) Professor Deonarain Brijlall from the Mathematics Department presented two research papers at the global conference. He was awarded the distinguished academic award in recognition of the research and scholarly contribution to the Mathematics Education community. The conference hosted over 60 presenters from 30 different countries (Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines, Vietnam, Taiwan, China, Pakistan, Iran, Brunei Darussalam, India, Nigeria, Australia, Japan, Russia, Poland, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Oman, Spain, Mexico, Romania, Norway, Portugal, United Kingdom, South Africa, Egypt, Algeria, and Ecuador). Prof Brijlall received the Best Presenter award in the Social Sciences section.

Prof Brijlall relays his thoughts on winning the esteemed international award on distinguished academic for Social Sciences at the international conference for his contribution to Mathematics Education research.

“The conference hosted the leading authorities in the two fields of Business Sciences and Social Sciences. The shortlisting process was carried out by a committee of academics from Malaysia, Australia and the United Kingdom. This panel considered all the academic contributions made by the various participants attending the conference. To be awarded this award meant that I am acknowledged to be a leading researcher on an international platform. It also acknowledges the high impact research that our institution promotes,” he said jubilantly.

Prof Brijlall holds a PhD in Topology (Mathematics) and B Ed (Hons) degree in Education. He is a C2 NRF rated scientist. He has over 90 publications in national and international journals and has supervised 13 doctoral students and 15 Masters’ students. His special focus is on Transformational Educational Studies engaging with research activities involved in the learning and teaching of mathematics in higher education. He serves on editorial boards of three international journals.

He elaborated how his area of expertise aligns with the ENVISION2030 and enhances academic research at DUT. Prof Brijlall said the conference activities and participation addressed the aspect of strategic perspectives of Sustainability and Society. “Transformed societies and economies depend on the various ways in which we influence and contribute to social and economic change. High school learners’ and university students’ Mathematics performance have a direct relationship to a nation’s scientific and technological improvement and learners’ competence in Mathematics and the Sciences is important for their social and economic standing. The research in Mathematics education targets strategies that could lead to more effective teaching and learning of Mathematics,” he added.

Prof Brijlall  indicated that the field of research he is engaged with impacts on responsive and productive global citizenship: A responsive and global citizen takes an active role in making the world a better place.

“Also the strategies that arise from my research provides mathematics instructors both at high school and undergraduate university more effective ways of pedagogy such as techniques of integration such as Integral Calculus. These lead to innovations and solutions to societal problems when solving real-life issues,” he said.

He further expressed that it is vital for academics like himself to attend such conferences.

“As a researcher you cannot work in isolation as the contribution of the research should not only impact locally but globally. Others in the world need to know what one is doing and vice versa. The conference creates an ideal space for research collaboration,” said Prof Brijlall .
