PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT FOR COIL (PD4COIL)

Professional Development for COIL was developed in the IEP Directorate and started rolling out in 2021. The rational for developing this course is to enhance and increase capacity for COIL to extend the benefit of Internationalisation to all students.

 

DUT PD4COIL includes 5 Focus Areas

Focus Area 1: Welcome to COIL

Welcome to COIL is a general introduction to COIL, introducing participants to the concept of COIL.

On completion, participants will be able to:

  • Recognise a range of different terms for International Virtual Engagement initiatives
  • Summarise the principles and characteristics of COIL as a pedagogy
  • Differentiate between COIL and International Virtual Engagement
  • Explain the stages in the design and implementation of a COIL project (including partnering)

 

Focus Area 2: Getting Started with COIL

In this focus area, participants will receive first-hand experience in developing and resigning a COIL project together with a partner.

On completion, participants will be able to:

  • Plan and finalise the idea for a project
  • Collaboratively formulate the learning outcomes for the project
  • Apply models such a TPACK in the design of learning and assessment activities
  • Actively reflect on all aspects of the project design through a lens of curriculum alignment and implement changes accordingly
  • Critically select and apply the most appropriate technology for a COIL project taking current context into consideration

 

Focus Area 3: Cultural Diversity an Intercultural Dialogue

This focus area covers intercultural learning in IVE and COIL. This aspect will cover how to approach intercultural learning an exchange between two student groups.

 

Focus Area 4: Scholarship of COIL

This focus area covers the scholarship of COIL as a pedagogical practice. It is recommended that this focus area is taken after Welcome to COIL and Getting Started with COIL.

On completion, participants will be able to:

  • Develop a research agenda for their own COIL practice
  • Complete a research proposal for independent research
  • Contribute to the DUT COIL Scholarship community of practice

 

Focus Area 5: Review and Evaluation of COIL

This focus area covers the review process for improvement for following iterations. Upon completion, participants will be able to:

  • Compare a variety of review and evaluation strategies applicable to COIL
  • Develop a review and evaluation strategy for their own context
