PROFESSOR KATLEHO MOLOI GRANTED CHARTERED ENGINEER STATUS BY THE INSTITUTE OF ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY IN THE UNITED KINGDOM

The Associate Professor and Head of Department: Electrical Power Engineering at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment, Professor Katleho Moloi, was recently granted the status of Chartered Engineer by the Institute of Engineering and Technology in the United Kingdom (UK). This internationally recognised accolade signifies Professor Moloi’s competence, expertise, and commitment to engineering excellence.

According to Professor Moloi who is involved in teaching, research, community engagement projects and academic citizenship, it was a tedious process to obtain the CEng status.

“Firstly, you need to demonstrate competencies in 17 UK engineering outcomes. You must have at least a Master’s degree in Engineering. You need to write an extensive report detailing your contribution in engineering. It took me over a year to finish my report. Moreover, you need to defend your report in the presence of an expert panel from both academia and industry. The interview went up to four hours. It is an added advantage if you are registered with your nation engineering council,” shared Professor Moloi.

Sharing his excitement on obtaining this new accolade, Professor Moloi indicated that he was thrilled and proud of himself upon hearing the good news. For him, it meant new opportunities would also arise going forward. He mentioned that he was expecting a positive outcome, considering the amount of work that he had put into the application process.

Professor Moloi believed that the CEng status would expand his engineering trajectory and position him as one of the leading experts in his field.

“Chartered Engineers (CEng) develop solutions to engineering problems using new or existing technologies, through innovation, creativity and change. They have technical accountability for complex systems with significant levels of risk. Chartered Engineers are able to demonstrate the theoretical knowledge to solve problems in new technologies and develop new, analytical techniques. They are responsible for the successful application of the knowledge to deliver innovative products and services and/or take technical responsibility for complex engineering systems,” shared Professor Moloi.

For him attaining the CEng status will provide numerous benefits, such as recognition and credibility since the status is internationally recognised and demonstrated that he had met the rigorous standards of competence and professionalism in the field of engineering. He shared that his CEng status may open opportunities for higher-level roles and leadership positions within the engineering profession. He plans to maintain his CEng status by staying up-to-date with the latest advancements, best practices, and technologies in his field.

For DUT, having Professor Moloi as a qualified Chartered Engineer will enhance its reputation for excellence in engineering education and research. This demonstrates DUT’s commitment to producing highly skilled staff who meet industry standard and expectations.
