PROVIDING ESSENTIAL SERVICES TO THE DUT COMMUNITY IN THE TIMES OF A PANDEMIC

The Durban University of Technology (DUT) continues to commend all its essential workers for their dedication and commitment in providing services to the DUT community during the COVID-19 pandemic. DUT Media Officer Simangele Zuma spoke to Mrs Elaine Giddings, Administrator for the Department of Applied Management at Riverside Campus in Pietermaritzburg.  

  

Q: Kindly tell me about your role at DUT? 

A: “I am the Administrator for the Applied Management Department on the Riverside Campus in Pietermaritzburg.” 

  

Q: How long have you been in that role?  

A: “I have been with the institution since 1991 but have been the Administrator for the Applied Management Department since 2003.” 

  

Q: Please provide a brief description of yourself? 

A: “I would describe myself as a cheerful, generally positive person, who likes to help my colleagues and students however I can.” 

  

Q: How has it been like working during COVID-19?  

A: “It has had its advantages and disadvantages but on the whole I think I have adapted to it pretty well but I do miss the interaction with my colleagues and students.” 

  

Q: How do you deal with the fear of contracting COVID-19 and losing loved ones due to this virus?   

A: “I do not let the fear get to me as I do not like to live like that, I just make sure that my family and I follow all protocols for COVID-19 in order to keep ourselves safe.” 

  

Q: What is your daily motivation?  

A: “To do my job to the best of my ability in order to help my department to run smoothly.” 

  

Q: Please take me through a normal day in your life?   

A: “At the moment my day is spent on my laptop responding to emails and helping students and staff with their queries, taking minutes of meetings when required, co-ordinating Advanced Diploma and Postgraduate Diploma applications as well as graduation applications, capturing of marks, assisting students with registration and any other issues that may arise.” 

  

Q: What do you like to do in your spare time? 

A: “I love spending time with my family and just relaxing.” 

  

 Q: If you had one wish what would it be?   

A: “For the world to be COVID free, so life can get back to normal.”
