The Durban University of Technology (DUT) continues to commend all its essential service workers for their dedication and commitment in providing services to the DUT community during the COVID-19 pandemic. DUT’s Communications team’s Nikiwe Sukazi spoke to a Security Personnel supervisor: DUT Durban campus, Mr Phaseka Mabuya who joined DUT since 2008.
Q: Kindly tell me about your role at DUT?
A: “I am a security supervisor and I oversee the workers, protect the campus property, including students and staff.”
Q: For how long have you been on that role?
A: “It has been 13 years since I have been in this role.”
Q: How would you describe yourself?
A: “I am warm hearted, very humble, yet sensitive person. I like things done in a certain way.”
Q: How do you cope with the rising numbers of COVID-19 infections?
A: “It is triggering, I will not lie and disturbing at the same time, but then we cannot control everything. All we must do is accept the situation and protect one another.”
Q: How do you deal with students who act unruly around campus, during this difficult time?
A: “Those students who want to enter the campus by force, I take them aside and try to explain to them the risks associated with the virus.”
Q: How do you de-stress?
A: “By watching television and taking a bath after a long day does the trick.”
Q: What is your favourite time of the day?
A: “Resting.”
Q: Are you a movie or series person?
A: “None of the above. I love music channels. I listen to Maskandi, jazz, and gospel music.”
Q: Your typical day entails…
A: “A lot of patrolling. My job requires me to walk around campus making sure that everything runs smoothly.”
Q: What is your practical advice or mantra that you follow and would impart to students?
A: “During this difficult time, wear a mask, sanitise, do health checks, use your elbow instead of hands when coughing or sneezing.”
