RadioDUT Celebrates First Birthday

RadioDUT, the Durban University of Technology’s campus radio station, recently celebrated its first birthday with children and staff at St Aidan’s Hospital as well as those at Othandweni Child and Youth Care Centre.

KwaZulu-Natal’s only campus radio (RadioDUT) turned one on Tuesday, 2 June 2015. RadioDUT, which is striving to be the number one campus radio station in South Africa, is not just another university radio station but a brand which aims to make a meaningful contribution to its community.

RadioDUT Station Manager, Sibusiso Nxumalo said the celebration was not only for RadioDUT but offered the station an opportunity to incorporate it with International Children’s Week. “RadioDUT is a youth initiative. This is why we saw a need to celebrate our birthday with young people.  We opted to make a difference in the lives of people who are vital to RadioDUT, it takes empowerment to ignite,” he said.

RadioDUT is an online based radio station that had its soft launch in June 2014. The diverse, vibrant radio station seeks to empower students before, during and after their academic lives. The creation of the radio station ties in with the University’s digital migration strategic plan to create something that will allow DUT to move into that phase.

“The aim of the two visits was to entertain, while also adding hope to the lives of the our young people,” added Nxumalo.

Extending their gratitude, the children of Othandweni Child and Youth Care Centre said they were ecstatic to spend time with the RadioDUT presenters. “We thank RadioDUT for remembering us on their special day. We thank them for the cake, sweets, chips and all the fun. We wish them prosperity in their whole existence,” said Msa Ndou from the Centre.
