RAHUL BUDHOO’S CUM LAUDE WITH A DEAN’S MERIT AWARD IS ONE OF THE GREATEST MILESTONES OF HIS LIFE

Rahul Budhoo, (21) from Durban, is passionate about helping others and making a positive impact on people’s lives, which is what inspired him to pursue a career in Radiotherapy.

The extremely proud lad received his Bachelor of Health Sciences in Radiotherapy. at the DUT 2026 Autumn Graduation Ceremony at the Olive Convention Centre.

He began my journey at DUT in 2022 when he had enrolled for a Bachelor of Health Sciences in Radiotherapy. His time at DUT has been both rewarding and transformative. Throughout his studies, he gained valuable academic knowledge, practical experience, and formed meaningful friendships.

Graduating Cum Laude with a Dean’s Merit Award is one of the greatest milestones of his life. “it is a moment of immense pride and gratitude for me, and I am honoured to have my hard work recognised in such a meaningful way,” beamed Rahul.

His family was extremely proud and emotional when they heard the news. They were excited to see his hard work and sacrifices finally pay off. Their support and encouragement throughout his studies played a major role in my success, so sharing this achievement with them made the moment even more special for him.

Rahul is currently completing his community service at Addington Hospital as a radiotherapist. In his role, he works closely with patients undergoing cancer treatment, and it is incredibly rewarding to be able to support and assist people during some of the most difficult times in their lives.

Espousing the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework is a pertinent aspect of Rahul’s life, as he explained how excellence, a key value, especially in the healthcare field, is how he treats his patients with dignity, empathy, and kindness is extremely important to him in his career and his personal life.

However, as a student, one of the biggest challenges  he faced as a student was dealing with academic pressure and stress while trying to maintain a healthy balance between his studies and personal life. “The demanding nature of the course required discipline, focus, and resilience. However, I remained committed to my goals and learned the importance of perseverance and self-belief,” he explained.

“Radiotherapy was his first choice of study. Rahul has always been passionate about helping others and making a difference in people’s lives, especially during difficult times. “The field combines healthcare, compassion, and advanced technology, which makes it the perfect career path for me,” he shared.

Rahul is committed to studying further in the future. He firmly believes that knowledge is one of the greatest resources a person can have, and continuous learning is important in the healthcare profession. He hopes to expand his skills and expertise so that he can provide even better care to his patients.

“My main aim is to build a successful career in Radiotherapy while having a positive impact on the lives of my patients. I want to continue growing professionally, gain more experience in the field, and contribute meaningfully to the healthcare sector by providing compassionate and high-quality patient care,” Rahul emphasised.

His advice to first-year students would be to stay focused, work hard, and never lose sight of their goals. “The journey may be challenging at times, but perseverance and determination will help you succeed. It is also important to take care of your mental and emotional well-being by making time for the things that make you happy and help you relax,” he said.
