RAMKISSON BAGS CUM LAUDE DESPITE DELAYS IN COMPLETING HIS DIPLOMA IN SHIPPING AND LOGISTICS

Varshan Ramkisson(23) from Durban is over the moon as he is set to graduate Cum Laude for his Diploma in Shipping and Logistics at the upcoming Durban University of Technology (DUT) 2024 Spring Graduation, to be held at the Durban Exhibition Centre on Thursday, 19 September 2024.

He is among the Faculty of Applied Sciences top achieving students and will be honoured for his academic excellence. He described his journey as a memorable learning experience that has shaped him to become a better person.

“Throughout my studies, I encountered moments that required adaptability and time management, like balancing coursework with commitments. These experiences taught me to be more organised and resilient, enhancing my problem-solving skills. They provided me with valuable lessons that strengthened my dedication and prepared me for future challenges,” he said.

Speaking about his career choice, Ramkisson said Shipping and Logistics was his first choice. He revealed that prior to making his decision, he spent some time conducting research on different career paths and later chose Shipping and Logistics.

“Shipping and Logistics was always my choice of study since I was a kid. I have been captivated by the way goods move around the world, connecting people and businesses across the border,” he narrated.

In the near future, the graduand aspires to develop professional skills and contribute to the industry by making a positive impact on growth and success of organisations within the industry, by optimising logistics management, reducing costs and maximising effectiveness. Ultimately, he aspires to achieve a role that displays a leadership and innovation status where he can drive innovation in global logistics management and shape the future of a more sustainable and strategic business environment.

Advising first year students who want to embark on the same career path, Ramkisson encouraged them to stay curious and actively engage with the real world aspects of shipping and logistics as this field is constantly evolving.

“Focus on building a strong foundation in both theory and practical applications and seek internships or industry exposure early on to gain valuable experience. Lastly, cultivate strong networking skills, as relationships within the industry are key to future opportunities and growth,” he said.
