RAMKISTAN HARBOURS A PASSION FOR SCIENCE WHICH MOTIVATED HIM TO STUDY BIOTECHNOLOGY AND ACHIEVE EXCELLENT RESULTS

The Durban University of Technology’s (DUT’s) Shannon Ramkistan graduated with Cum Laude and received the prestigious Dean’s Merit Award for his Bachelor of Applied Sciences: Biotechnology at the DUT Autumn Graduation ceremony held at Olive Convention Centre this afternoon, (Tuesday 23 May 2023).

The 21-year-old from Verulam explained that from a young age he harboured a genuine curiosity and passion for Science, particularly Biology. The desire for learning led him to pursue a career in Biotechnology. The confluence of Biology and Technology and the practical applications of Biotechnology had motivated him to study  Biotechnology.

He shared that although today he is celebrating there are some challenges that he had faced while studying towards his degree.

“Some of the main challenges I faced as a student was time management in which balancing my studies with other commitments was a hurdle. I had overcome this problem by prioritising tasks, creating work schedules and allocating time slots for different activities. Another major challenge was the pressure to do well academically, which I had overcome by focusing on my personal progress and setting goals for myself,” explained Ramkistan.

Ramkistan added that his parents played a major role in motivating him to  focus on his studies and guiding him throughout the years. The importance of focusing on his studies to unlock opportunities in the course of his career and reaching his full potential had also motivated him.

He further shared his excitement upon being conferred his degree and receiving the esteemed Dean’s Merit Award.

“Graduating Cum Laude and receiving a Dean’s Merit Award filled me with a deep sense of pride and accomplishment as it reflects all my hard work and dedication throughout the years of my studies,” he said jubilantly.

Furthermore, Ramkistan shared that he wants to continue with his studies but his primarily focus is to complete his Honours Degree. He urges students to embrace lifelong learning and a growth mindset for continuous development.

“Setting goals, time management and working smart is essential in helping you to achieve good results and to maintain a balance between your studies and personal life. The university is also a great place to prepare you in the field of Biotechnology in which the practical experience gained will be of great importance,” advised Ramkistan.
