RESEARCH NEWS: DUT SHOWCASES RESEARCH TRANSFORMATION AT GLOBAL SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT CONGRESS 2026 IN JAKARTA INDONESIA

The Durban University of Technology (DUT) is participating in the Global Sustainable Development Congress 2026 taking place in Jakarta Indonesia from 22 to 25 June 2026 where its research transformation journey has been highlighted as part of global discussions on sustainability innovation and the evolving role of higher education institutions in addressing societal challenges.

On Day one of the Congress DUT was represented by Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research Innovation and Engagement and Principal Prof Fulufhelo Nemavhola and Director Research and Postgraduate Support Dr Nomcebo Mthombeni who presented on the University’s research development trajectory in a session titled Building Sustainable Research Centres of Excellence DUT’s Research Revolution and the Institute for Water and Wastewater Technology (IWWT) Model.

The presentation outlined DUT’s strategic efforts to strengthen its research ecosystem and position the University as a responsive impact driven institution Central to the discussion was the evolution of the IWWT which has grown from a specialised research unit into a nationally recognised platform and an emerging global knowledge hub.

The IWWT model was showcased as a case study demonstrating how deliberate investment in research chairs postgraduate development international collaboration and strong industry partnerships can significantly enhance research excellence while delivering meaningful societal impact..

Drawing from this model DUT highlighted how universities can build sustainable research ecosystems that contribute meaningfully to global development priorities including the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals SDGs and the African Union’s Agenda 2063

The presentation positioned DUT as an active contributor to global knowledge exchange on how higher education can drive innovation sustainability and inclusive development through strong and responsive research systems. The Congress brings together global higher education leaders to advance dialogue on sustainability and development

Through its participation in Jakarta Indonesia DUT continues to strengthen its global partnerships and reinforce its commitment to advancing research that responds to pressing societal and environmental challenges.
