RESILIENT NONDUDUZO MKHIZE CHOSE DUT BECAUSE OF ITS COMMITMENT TO INCLUSIVITY

This Thriving Friday  the spotlight shines  on a remarkable student, Nonduduzo Mkhize, a resilient and driven first-year Diploma in Fine Arts student at the Durban University of Technology within the Faculty of Arts and Design.

Born on 26 July in Amanzimtoti, Nonduduzo experienced hearing loss at the age of eight, an event that reshaped her world but never limited her aspirations. Instead, it strengthened her resilience and deepened her determination to succeed.

She completed her high school education at Fulton School for the Deaf, where she consistently excelled academically and distinguished herself as a top-performing learner. Her commitment to excellence and perseverance have remained defining qualities throughout her journey.

Now immersed in her Fine Arts studies, Nonduduzo is cultivating her creative voice and exploring art as a powerful medium of expression and connection. With the dedicated support of her interpreter, Thobeka Dlomo, provided by the Disability Rights Unit, she actively participates in lectures and academic activities, demonstrating that determination and passion can transcend barriers.

Reflecting on her journey, Nonduduzo shares, “Losing my hearing changed how I experience the world, but it never changed my dreams. Art allows me to express what I feel and to connect with others beyond words. I want my work to inspire people to see ability before disability.”

Speaking about her decision to choose DUT, she adds, “I chose DUT because of its strong arts programme and its commitment to inclusivity. From the very beginning, I felt welcomed and supported. The Disability Rights Unit has been incredible. They ensure I have the tools and assistance I need to succeed. Knowing that I am supported allows me to focus fully on my studies and my growth as an artist.”

Through her journey, Nonduduzo embodies resilience, creativity, and courage. Her story reflects the values of inclusion, excellence, and innovation that define the DUT community.
