ROAD TO COMRADES: DUT ATHLETES TRAIN IN THE FAMOUS BONGUMUSA MTHEMBU TRAINING ROUTE IN BULWER

In preparation for the Comrades Marathon, a group of Durban University of Technology (DUT) athletes recently held a training session in Bulwer, KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, tackling the renowned training route associated with legendary runner Bongumusa Mthembu.

The training delivered both a physically demanding and inspiring experience for the athletes at an altitude of approximately 1900 metres above sea level, presenting the dual challenge of steep climbs and thinner air. For DUT runners, this environment was ideal for building endurance, mental resilience, and preparing for the Comrades Marathon on 14 June 2026.

Training on a route linked to Bongumusa Mthembu, one of South Africa’s most celebrated Comrades champions, was a source of pride and motivation for DUT runners. The training not only tested their physical limits but also connected them to the legacy and spirit of excellence in South African long-distance running.

Among the DUT staff and students who attended the training were Mr Lindokuhle Manyoni, Mr Ntuthuko Wesley Ngcobo, Mr Steven Mkhize, Mr Xolani Mkhize, Mr Lubabalo Mbangata, Dr Mthobisi Ntuli, Ms Nqobile Mngadi, Mr Ngceba Kenisa, and Mr Khaya Ngubane. The event was graced by the presence of former Comrades Marathon Board member, Mr Mqondisi Ngcobo, who also participated in the session.

One of the university’s top athletes, Mr Lindokuhle Manyoni, a Road Running Coordinator and PhD in Chemical Engineering candidate at DUT, spoke about the benefits of the session.

“The 1900 metres above sea level altitude was tough, but it is exactly what we needed. It tested our breathing and endurance in a way that flat routes cannot. I am confident that this training will give us an edge on race day. What stood out for me was the support from my teammates. We pushed each other through the climbs and reminded one another why we were doing this. That unity will carry us through the Comrades Marathon,” said Manyoni.

DUT Sports Officer, Mr Yandisa Mdolomba, commended the athletes for their dedication following the high-altitude training session in Bulwer on the iconic route linked to Bongumusa Mthembu.

“This training run was a critical part of our preparation for the Comrades Marathon. Exposing our athletes to high-altitude conditions of around 1900 metres above sea level was intentional as it strengthened both their physical endurance and mental capacity. We are proud of how the team responded to the challenge. Their discipline, unity, and determination were evident throughout the session,” reiterated Mdolomba.

Sharing similar sentiments, coach Thuso Mosia said, “I am happy with the commitment and determination shown by the DUT runners, which will certainly yield positive results. This was our second session of the high-altitude training, and we still have two more sessions remaining, including 60 kilometre training runs similar to the Bulwer session.”

Overall, the Bulwer training run served as a powerful preparation platform, equipping DUT athletes with the strength, stamina, and determination needed to take on one of the world’s most iconic ultramarathons.
